ThinkPad-10주년 맞아

컴퓨터의 표준이라 불리우는 IBM의 노트북 브랜드인 ThinkPad가 탄생 10주년을 맞 이했다. 컴퓨터 업계에서 ThinkPad는 가장 성공한 브랜드 중 하나로 인정받고 있다.

ThinkPad가 처음 출시되었던 1992년부터 지금까지 노트북 시장에서 ThinkPad의 위 치는 가히 독보적이라 말할 수 있으며 10년이 넘었지만 여전히 세련된 디자인과 기능의 혁신성 등 타사 제품군과 엄격히 차별되는 특징을 지니고 있다. 현재까 지 판매된 ThinkPad의 수는 1500만 대에 이른다.



그뿐 아니라 ThinkPad는 1993년 미국의 우주 왕복선인 스페이스 셔틀에 실려 최초로 우주 여행을 한 노트북이기 도 하다. 또한 ThinkPad는 신기술의 대명사이기도 하다. 신기술이 개발되면 그것을 최초로 탑재하는 노트북이 바로 ThinkPad였는데, 예를 들자면 컬러 액정, 14인치 액정, 풀사이즈 키보드, DVD 드라이브, 착탈식 하드디 스크 등이 모두 ThinkPad에 최초로 탑재된 신기술 들이다. 그 외에도 독특한 특징 들이 더 있는데, 가령 어두운 곳에서 키보드 사용을 용의하게 해주는 싱크라이트 나 티타늄 제질을 이용해 노트북의 강성을 높인 것, 완벽에 가까운 보안기능 등 을 통해 ThinkPad의 가치를 높여 왔다. 하지만 ThinkPad가 늘 성공만을 거둔 것은 아니다.

Origimi 키보드와 필기 인식 기능, 특히 ThinkPad 트랜스 노트 등은 실패의 전형적인 사례이다. ThinkPad라는 이름은 처음부터 노트북에 사용된 이름이 아니었다. 최초의 사용은 IBM의 타블릿에 적용되었으나 타블릿 생산을 중단하면서 92년 ThinkPad 700c에 처 음으로 ThinkPad라는 이름을 사용하였다. 최초의 ThinkPad가 된 700의 사양은 25MHz의 CPU에 4MB 메모리, 10.4 인치의 액정을 장착하였다. 지금보면 우습기 그 지 없는 사양이지만 그 당시로서는 놀라운 사양을 갖춘 솔루션이였다.

그 이후 티타늄 케이스를 적용한 ThinkPad 600 시리즈로 IBM은 대성공을 거두게 되었다. 이 때부터 키보드 중앙에 장착된 트랙포인트(일명 빨간콩)은 지금까지 ThinkPad의 상징으로 여겨지고 있다. ThinkPad 모델 중에서 가장 인상적인 모델은 누가 뭐래도 ’버터플라이’라고 불리 던 ThinkPad701 시리즈를 들 수 있다. 전문가들로부터 가장 진보된 형태의 키보드 라는 찬사를 들었던 ThinkPad701은 키보드가 좌우로 벌어져 다시 맞물리는 형식으 로 제작되어 있는데, 당시엔 미니급에 해당했던 몸체에서 풀사이즈 키보드가 튀어 나오는 놀라움을 선사했다. 높은 가격과 너무 앞서가는 형식으로 인해 성공을 거 두지는 못했지만 늘 새로움을 추구하는 ThinkPad의 정신을 잘 보여주는 모델이었 다고 평가할 수 있다.

물론 현재의 시장은 델과 컴팩, 도시바 등이 주도하고 있지만 아직도 노트북 시장 에서 가장 성공한 브랜드를 꼽으라면 사람들은 주저 없이 ThinkPad를 떠올린다. 지금은 노트북 판매시장에서 제법 밀려 있는 ThinkPad이지만 10년 동안 노트북 시 장의 황태자로 군림했던 경력이 있는 만큼 앞으로의 행보에 많은 이의 관심이 쏠 려 있다.
